TOP FIVE MUST DRIVE ROAD TRIPS

If you’ve been on a road trip holiday before then you’ll understand why so many people adore them but if it’s a new concept to you then you can be forgiven for feeling confused and uncertain.

Rest assured, a road trip is one of the best ways to spend your time and whilst there are hundreds to choose from here are five – from all parts of the world – that should be on your bucket list.

5 – A HIGHLAND FLING ON SCOTLAND’S ROUTE 500

This 516 mile loop has been dubbed Scotland’s answer to Route 66 and whilst the journey is somewhat different to that offered in the States you can see why it’s a big hit with tourists. The recommended route starts in Inverness, where a paltry £5 will give you access to the castle viewing platform that offers sweeping views of the capital of the Highlands, and takes you through a land of lochs, distilleries, beaches and so much more.

The must do: Get a photo taken with the John o’Groats sign

4 – NOTHING BUT DELIGHT IN GERMANY’S BLACK FOREST

A trip through the Black Forest, which is the birthplace of the character Munroe from television series Grimm, is a road trip with a difference with the natural feel coming from mountains, waterfalls, lakes and all year greenery that feels never ending. Where architecture is concerned, you’ll be treated to viaduct bridges and gothic buildings everywhere you stop and if you’re looking for a souvenir then look no further than a cuckoo clock.

The must do: Jump aboard the Feldberg cable car for unrivalled views of Schluchsee Lake

3 – AMERICA’S PERFECT PACIFIC HIGHWAY

Very few roads will present you the opportunity to combine a combination of city centre hustle and bustle with golden sands and an abundance of wildlife. If you start your journey in San Francisco you can check out the famed Golden Gate Bridge before heading south where your drive, that will include Big Sur, will see you embrace surfers at Santa Cruz, Elephant Seals at Cambria and walk amongst the stars in Hollywood before ending your journey in San Diego, which is home to the best zoo in the world.

2 – THE OCEAN ROAD IS GREAT IN OZ

This trip can be completed in a few days, which gives it the edge for those who haven’t road tripped before or those who are pressed for time. Whilst the drive in South Australia will give you cliff top views of some of the worlds best beaches it’s not limited to sand and sea with tree top walks and forest canopy zip wires just a teaser of what’s available. There is wildlife galore – including kangaroos and koalas – and the food and drink available throughout is sensational.

The must do: Check out the platypus at Lake Elizabeth

1 – THE RING ROAD OF ICELAND

If you’re going to drive in Iceland, then you might as well take a trip on the longest road the country has to offer. The road spans over 800 miles and encompasses a host of environmental offerings from Gullfoss to the Blue Lagoon, which is the most visited tourist attraction in the land. If nature is your thing the coastline may treat you to views of puffins and, if you’re really lucky, whales. There are mountains, caves and even giant eggs to stop and snap so the only question that remains is when to go. Summer months offer better driving conditions and means you’ll be able to travel more lightly (winter clothing and car safety packs take up a lot of space) but if you have the nerve to hit the route between October and March then you might be driving under the dancing green of the Northern Lights.

The must do: Straddle two continents where the tectonic plates are separating

There you have it, five of the best road trips planet Earth has to offer. If you do take to the open road to check out one of the above, then we’d love to hear from you below.
