Born on this day, Ron Tauranac, Australian designer for Formula 1 driver Jack Brabham from 1962 until 1970 season. He also redesigned a Politoys Formula 1 chassis for Frank Williams in 1973 and helped Trojan develop a Formula 1 version of their Formula 5000 car. Tauranac then founded entry formula constructor Ralt which become the brand to beat in F2 and F3. He also designed the Theodore Racing F1 car for the 1978 season. The team was not very successful for various reasons largely unrelated to the quality of the chassis. In October 1988 Taruranac sold the Ralt business to March Engineering for 1.25m British pounds and retired back to Australia, acting as engineering consultant to one or the other team in the that country’s domestic V8 series.
