The Hyundai Pony was introduced in Canada, the first Korean car to be marketed in North America. It initially came only with a 1439 cc (88ci) 4G33 engine inline-four, rated at 70hp (52kW) and 82 lb·ft (111 N·m) of torque. This engine was available with either a 4-speed or 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic transmission. Trim levels were L (standard), GL (deluxe), and GLS (glorious).
