The Frankfurt-Darmstadt (Germany) Autobahn was opened by Adolf Hitler. It is often considered the first true motorway in the world, a four-lane divided highway with interchanges intended for public use. This would serve as a model for the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the US which opened for business on October 1, 1940.
