The most watched car chase in the world was transmitted live when O J Simpson failed to turn himself in after the murder of his ex-wife and her friend Ronald Goldman 5 days earlier. At 6.45 am, Simpson’s 1993 white Ford Bronco was spotted going north on Interstate 405 by a patrolman. The driver, Simpson’s friend Al Cowling, said that Simpson had a gun to his head. Over the next hour Cowling and Simpson drove round Los Angeles, filmed by up to a dozen news helicopters and watched by 95 million in the US alone.

A white Ford Bronco carrying O.J. Simpson in the back seat and driven by his friend Al Cowlings led police on an extraordinary pursuit for close to 50 miles.
