The Lincoln Highway Association announced the route of the Lincoln Highway, from Time Square, New York to Lincoln Park, San Francisco. Its leaders, particularly Henry Joy, President of the Packard Motor Car Company, decided on as straight a route as possible and that decision dictated the course, which went through 13 states. That initial line was 3,389 miles long. Over the years, the road was improved and numerous realignments were made, and by 1924 the highway had been shortened to 3,142 miles.
