TOP-10: the best cars of the 1990s

Today we will be talking about popular and beloved models using the example of cars produced in the 1990s. Like last time, we decided to include no more than one model from one manufacturer in the TOP-10. By the way, the cars produced in the last decade of the last century are still very popular in our country.

10th place –  Mazda 626

Today’s hit parade is opened by the Japanese Mazda 626 sedan, which can often be found in Eastern Europe today, not so much in other parts of the world. The fourth generation of this model was produced from 1992 to 1997. The car is found in two body types: a sedan and a liftback (which is now called a hatchback). Most often there are versions with gasoline engines of 1.8 and 2 liters and a capacity of 105 and 115 liters. from. respectively. There are also cars with a 2-liter 75-horsepower unit. The 2.5-liter V6 (petrol, 165 hp) is extremely rare, but it is loved by fans of the model.

9th place – Opel Vectra

The Vectra model is considered by many to be the first Opel to receive so many positive reviews globally, where since ancient times it is believed that “all Opel rot” and “Opel is not a car”. In the 1990s, two generations of this model were produced at once: before 1995 – the first, after – the second. Both have gained great popularity in sales.

The most interesting today can be considered the second generation Vectra, which many people remember due to the very elegant transition of the stamping on the hood to the exterior mirrors. The car was equipped with gasoline and diesel engines with a volume of 1.6 to 2.6 liters (power from 75 to 170 hp).

8th place –  Peugeot 406

The successor of the Peugeot 405, which got into the previous TOP-10, is the 406 model, well known in our country. The car is more often found in the sedan body, but it is enough in the open spaces of the Blue-eyed and station wagons. Many people fell in love with “four hundred and sixth” after the movie “Taxi”, in which the restyled version was filmed.

7th place –  Citroen Xantia

Another “Frenchman” whom we decided to place in the rating is Citroen Xantia. The model was on the assembly line from 1993 to 2001. Concern PSA has released more than 1.5 million copies of Xantia. The car has either a station wagon or a liftback body. We have a “barn” about one and a half times less common.

The car can be found with gasoline and diesel engines ranging from 1.6 (88 HP) to 3 liters (190 HP). True, the most powerful (6-cylinder) ones are practically not found in our country.

6th place –  Renault Scenic

The founder of the compact van segment is very fond of Belarusians. From 1996 to 1999, the car was called Renault Megane Scenic (from the name it is easy to guess on whose platform it was built). After restyling in 1999 – just Renault Scenic. The model still has this name.

5th place –  Ford Mondeo

After the rather popular Ford Sierra left the market, it was replaced by the Mondeo. We have equally frequent models of both the first (1993-1996) and second (1996-2000) generation. Although from the point of view of price / consumer qualities, Mondeo II is still popular in European countries. The car has always been produced with sedan, liftback and station wagon bodies. We have all three versions. Often on the market you can find expensive configurations of the second Mondeo, which include air conditioning, wood inserts in the cabin, full power accessories, electric sunroof, etc. The most popular engines are 1.8 and 2 liter petrol engines. Less often, you can find the most modest gasoline unit (1.6 liters) and 1.8-liter diesel.

4th place –  Mercedes E- Class

In 1995, the new Mercedes E-Class entered the market, which differed from its predecessor (W124) with four round headlights. For them, the car received many nicknames: “bespectacled”, “big-eyed”, “lupaty”, etc. The car was produced in sedan and station wagon bodies, but we mainly drive sedans. Often – beige (thanks to German taxi drivers for careful operation).

The line of power units included a huge number of engines with power from 95 (E220 D) to 354 (E55 AMG) liters. from. We have diesel engines about eight times more common. Gasoline is usually either 2 or 2.3 liters.

3rd place –  Audi 80

The three leaders in the “popular” TOP are closed by the well-known “barrel” Audi 80 (in the back of B4). This is the fourth generation of the “eighties” and the second “barrel”. The model was produced from 1991 to 1996 and, having retired, gave way to the first generation of the Audi A4, whose successors still have this name.

The Audi 80 B4 was fitted with eight different engines ranging from 75 to 174 hp. from. Like its predecessor, this model had a coupe body type. The two-door version (simply called the Audi Coupe) is quite rare in our area and is well appreciated. From 1991 to 2000, a convertible based on the Audi 80 B4 was produced.

2nd place –  BMW 5- Series ( E39)

We hesitated for a long time which BMW to include in this TOP-10. In the 1990s, two popular Bavarian models were produced – the 3-Series (E36) and 5-Series (E39). We stopped at the latter, since it is more recent. In addition, there are more “live” copies on the market just “thirty-ninth”. BMW produced this business model exclusively in sedan and station wagon bodies.

Usually the 5-Series is richly equipped and has all the options necessary for life: air conditioning, full power accessories, a set of airbags. On this “five” were put as many as 14 different options for power units with a capacity of 136 to 400 liters. from. The most powerful version is the BMW M5, which is fiercely loved by fans of the brand and just fans of large “charged” sedans.

1st place –  Volkswagen Passat B3 / B4

The leader of our today’s TOP-10 needs no introduction – it is Volkswagen Passat B3 / B4. From 1988 to 1997, VAG produced the same Passat model, but traditionally, after a deep restyling in 1993, the car was presented as a new generation (B4), although the line of power units and platform remained the same. Even the body is minimal.

Thanks to relatively strong bodies and hardy engines, the B3 and B4 are not going to be retired yet. Many examples work in good faith in taxi services. The Germans installed 21 variants of power units on the third and fourth generations of the model, whose volume varied from 1.6 to 2.8 liters, and the power – from 72 to 174 liters. From.
